Crosswords are Great for the Brain

By admin · Monday, December 8th, 2008

Age affects us in different ways but for each of us it can impact on our memory, levels of concentration and thought processes.  Our modern lifestyle is contributing to the increasing levels of Alzheimer’s and Dementia in our society.  Don’t despair because there are things that we can do to help keep our brains healthy.

A study in the US found that consistent sessions of brain activity can help keep the brain healthy and functioning well.   Scientist’s think that brain exercise can help to strengthen nerve cells in the brain and possibly help to create new ones.  The same study suggested that activity now will have a long term benefit offering some protection for years to come.

Alzheimers Australia  says that “Adults with hobbies that exercise their brain are 2.5 times less likely to have Alzheimer’s disease. The evidence is clear.”  The more mentally challenging the activity the better the result is for the brain.

One of the best ways to stimulate the brain is through crossword and number puzzles.   Done regularly, the concentration and though involved will have the long term effect of delaying or reducing the affects of mind decay.  These puzzles focus the brain for just the right amount of time and intensity to achieve long lasting benefits.  They are also new each day so you are not repeating the same activity as you would if you redo a jigsaw puzzle and you are therefore giving your brain constant stimulation.  The other advantage of structured puzzles like word and number puzzles is that you can track your improvements.  You might find it hard to complete a crossword when you first start but keep at it.  In a few weeks time you will be able to look back and see how much you have improved.  You might even have fully completed the puzzle for the day.
