Left Brain vs Right Brain

By admin · Monday, February 16th, 2009

We have all heard about left brain and right brain and how it affects the way we operate.  Left brain refers to our logical and analytical thought processes.  Right brain is for the creative and visual processes.  In fact, we don’t really work like that.  These are just ways of describing our usual thinking processes.

Most of us have a dominant or preferred thinking style.  We all know people who are incredibily logical or strategic and others who are artistically talented.  In fact, most of the things we do need elements from both styles of thinking.   For example an inventor needs to be creative and visual as they develop their work but they also need to have strong powers of critical thinking and analysis to be able to plan the work and assess it.

Do you know what your preferred thinking style is?  Are you ‘left brain’ or ‘right brain’?  By knowing your strength you can use it properly.  A good choice of work project could really show your talents off to the boss!  Knowing your strength also means that you know your weakness and can work to improve it.

Puzzles are a great way to exercise both sides of the brain.   Some puzzles will strenghten the visual side and those puzzles include anything related to recognising shapes and patterns.  Other puzzles strengthen your logical thought processes and there are many forms of logic puzzle around.   Most puzzles will use aspects of both thought processes so every puzzle you do will strengthen the connections in your brain.  Practice makes perfect, as they say.

If you aren’t sure which is your dominant side then check out this image from the Herald Sun site.  Try to make it move both ways.  Good luck!
