1199543_yogaIn our last post we talked about the brain and how being able to manage your brainwaves can help you get your mind ready for learning.  Todays post follows on.

The Alpha state is the one in which your brain is most receptive so it is ideal for learning or for those times when you are looking for a solution to a problem.  We found that meditation was one way to achieve this ‘alpha’ state.

In an interesting article from the Dalai Lama site we found the results of  a scientific study on meditation and how it affects the brain.    Scientists were interested to find out if human thought could actually alter the way the brain functioned.  “The idea was not to document brain changes during meditation but to see whether such mental training produces enduring changes in the brain.”

By comparing the brain activity of monks who were experienced at meditation with people who were new to it, scientists noticed specific activity in the brain.   Monks with  more hours of meditation training showed a strong signal which did not die off when they ceased meditating.

“The brains of all the subjects showed activity in regions that monitor one’s emotions, plan movements, and generate positive feelings such as happiness.  Our findings clearly indicate that meditation can change the function of the brain in an enduring way. “

The study showed that it is possible to control your brain and shape its functions and that meditation has a powerful effect on the way we think and feel.

Wouldn’t it be a great world if we all meditated and became happy, caring and considerate problem solvers?
