Coffee and Crosswords for your Brain
Did you see recently in the newspaper and on TV that coffee can be good for your brain? Apparently coffee can help protect your mind against Alzheimer’s.
Researchers bred mice to develop symptoms of Alzheimer’s and their experiments showed an amazing result. Barchester Health Care News says “When given the equivalent of five cups of coffee a day, the abnormal levels of protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease were significantly decreased, the research states.” It goes on to say “Previous research has also suggested that coffee can cut the risk of dementia – by blocking the damage inflicted by cholesterol.”
Isn’t that good news?
Even better, moderate amounts of coffee not only help protect your brain but they seem to reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
I know that many of us have been worried about the effect that coffee can have on us – increased blood pressure, over-stimulation and so on. Dr Arendash, who is the leader of this study, was reported on the ABC as saying “ “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding these purported negative effects of caffeine.” He went on to say, “For individuals who take in caffeine on a regular basis, what we would call habitual caffeine or coffee users, there really isn’t any substantial evidence showing increase in blood pressure or increase in arrhythmias occurring.”
How much coffee should you be drinking? Reports suggest that anything from 2 to 5 cups per day would be good but it probably depends on how strong your coffee is. Dr Arendash says that 500grams per day would be good. Now, don’t run out and start drinking coffee if you are still in your teens because the recommendation applies to people of middle age. You also need to consider your overall health before making any changes in your coffee consumption.
Now you have a great reason to sit down with a good cup of coffee and a puzzle. If anyone questions you all you need to say is that you are taking a health break!

I was scrolling through the featured articles in today’s Total Mind and Body Fitness Carnival when I saw your post. Great article, I must add.
I drink coffee every now and then, though I’m not a daily drinker. I remember reading up somewhere that coffee does reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s, and it’s great to have a little reminder! What I didn’t know was that coffee can actually reverse the effects. That’s great news, especially for the heavy coffee drinkers out there.
Great read! I look forward to hearing some more.
